Beating your brotha proud?

Well, what do you know: UP relinquishes its history of frat violence with the killing of UP student Cris Mendoza.

Because I have the social skills of a rock, I don't get fraternities. But then my dad was a Freemason (arguably one of the first fraternities in the world) and even with all those brotherhood-is loyalty machismo, when he died we were best left to feign for ourselves instead of going with the brotherhood. I mean, I have a complete set of limbs and a working brain, right? And I have friends, so thank you very much.

Here's a very basic view that I'd like to say against fraternity violence, from a person whom everone hated and had no friends until college: nobody has the right to beat me up. I don't know Cris Mendoza, but I know that he does not deserve that.

So I don't get how these people would gain my respect by beating me up, unless it's the first half-hour of 2001: A Space Odyssey, and we are still monkeys vying for supremacy. We went through things like Machiavelli, the de Medici's, Ferdinand Marcos, AKO Batch '81 and The Godfather, telling us to use our brains and be better. But testosterone gets the better of us, so much so that we kill for it.

Again, I don't get it. And with the incident coming from a university emphasizing on solidarity, intelligence, and common sense, I really, really don't get it.

exactly my sentiments... my brother just entered high school and my parents were forcing me to give this "talk" bout frat and and all. I was really thinking of what to tell him because I don't want it to sound like: "basta, masama yun at mamatay ka"

so i asked my boyfriend right. of what would be the best way to explain it. Phil asked me why my parents were so concerned. I explained that someone from claret died from (russian roulette), not sure bout the term and spelling, anyway phil said "buti na lang namatay sya" to which i was confused, and he said "dahil tanga sya".

cause if you consider a fraternity, tanga ka na, if you allowed hazing, tanga ka ulit and you agreed to that russian thingie, tanga ka na naman, lastly, when you pull the trigger while the gun is pointed at your throat and thought I am doing this for my soon to be brothers who will die for me anytime. well i think you get my point...

so i rephrased my "talk": wag ka sasali ng fraternity kse magigi kang tanga.
am kidding! anyway, bout 2 of my uncles are fratmembers (and i take that against them) and my dad was labeled "barbaric" in college for not joining one...

so what do you think? barbaric when you chose not to join one... i like the irony
A guy going crazy and doing the russian roulette (yup, you got it right :)) to belong, and/or because of peer pressure, is really, really disturbing. And not to mention really stupid, because nobody should convince you of your worth. Most of these people are looking for attention/affection/friends/family they do not usually get.

Oo nga e, it's especially hard for guys. We had a really, really nice blockmate who joined his dad's frat, because it's a family tradition. As he became a member, he became unapproachable, a delinquent, and fat. Like we never knew him. :P
